To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
